Statement

We begin each new project with research. Before Covid, we visited the sites, met with all the stakeholders, and listened and learned everything we could about the goals of the project and the needs of the stakeholders. Since Covid we rely on a combination of site visits and google maps, and images and also information provided by the client and in on-line meetings. So far this has worked quite well.

After the research phase we create concept drawings and explore multiple design directions. We present a wide range of ideas through clear drawings and plans. We present these ideas to the stakeholders and when a concept is selected, we develop the design with many more drawings, including color sketches, scale models and finally construction documents. There are opportunities for development and review at each phase.

We build the sculptures in-house to ensure quality and continuity of vision.

We are frequently asked to create artwork using unusual themes. Each one is a challenge, but we always rise the occasion, and we believe that pushing the parameters of our visual vocabulary has helped us grow as artists.

In 2018, we created a series of entrance sculptures for Spirit Park in Allen, Texas. Spirit Park has 4 professional-grade ball fields, as well as an entrance garden of indigenous plantings. Our task was to design and create artworks that enhanced the grounds and followed the theme and use of the park. We created 13 permanent sculptures, sited throughout the entrance garden, some depicting red hot poker plants using aluminum baseball bats (approx. 400 bats) as a sculptural material to create oversized, abstracted, indigenous plants. The sculptures are successful, and we are proud of the completed work.

We have permanent public art installations in 10 states across the country. Some states, like Texas and Florida have several May+Watkins sculptures in their permanent collections. We use materials and processes that stand up to the climate hot, cold, wet, dry – and to public use.
